Support from a health coach

Find out what health coaches do

Your health coach is trained and qualified to support you to take positive steps to improve your wellbeing and quality of life alongside your medical care.

The Live Well Feel Better service adheres to NHS best practice in managing your information and adheres to the Quality Institute of Self Management Education and Training national quality standard http://www.qismet.org.uk.

The coaches for Live Well Feel Better are trained and assessed against a set of core skills and competencies developed over a number of years and are based upon a number of national programmes that have been rigorously evaluated in the NHS.

Most coaches already have previous experience in counselling and life coaching and all the Live Well Feel Better coaches receive training and ongoing supervision and assessment.

Your coach knows that managing a health condition isn’t always easy or straightforward and will support you as you find out what works best for you. Your coach is there to listen to you, guide you and support you.

Your coach will:

  • Help you to set realistic achievable goals.
  • Help you to identify any challenges you’re facing and why they present a challenge.
  • Help you work out the easiest ways to overcome these challenges (what works for you may not be what works for someone else).

Your coach will not:

  • Provide treatments
  • Tell you what to do
  • Judge your progress
  • Provide advice on treatment, diagnosis or information specific to your health condition

Here are some examples of how people have been supported by the coaches on the Live Well Feel Better programme:

Claire, Lewes

"When we started I honestly felt that there was no way that I could be helped, I would just go through the motions and carry on on my dark and gloomy way. After a couple of chats however things began to change. It has being a great help to be able to talk to someone outside my family, someone I could open up to about my feelings without worrying that I was either putting pressure on my family or just getting the answers they felt I should hear... to realise that I am actually capable of both setting and achieving quite significant goals really was a light bulb moment.

The satisfaction gained has given me a new sense of self belief - no longer will I sit alone and lost, this few months have shown that many few steps can produce a long profitable journey. When we started I honestly felt that there was no way that I could be helped, I would just go through the motions and carry on on my dark and gloomy way."

Graham, Lewes

"I have found the service has made a big positive difference for me.  The things that have really helped are help get me to think about what issues need addressing for an improved quality of life. The setting of specific goals towards the achievement of that improved quality. Real practical help in finding tools and organisations that can support and help.  I also appreciate your whole positive attitude and general enthusiasm.  Thank you!"
